Steven Hickey
Born in Liverpool, Steven took up the guitar at the early age of 5. In 2003, Steven successfully auditioned for a place at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, where he studied guitar and saxophone. In 2005, Steven was awarded a place at the prestigious Chethams School of Music to further his music studies. 2007 saw Steven gain a place at the RNCM, where he is currently studying for a performance degree under the tutelage of Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey.
Steven has performed extensively throughout the UK as both a soloist and chamber musician. Notable concerts include a performance at the Manchester Guitar Circle with his guitar trio in 2006, who also performed at the 2007 ‘Abolition of Slavery’ celebrations at the Urbis, Manchester. Steven has performed in many lunchtime concerts in the North West at venues which included Manchester Cathedral and Baronial Hall. A recent review of the 2008 RNCM Guitars concert by Classical Guitar Magazine described Steven as ‘a very accomplished young performer’, based on his performance of a viola/guitar duet.
Steven has also enjoyed competition success, which include first prize for guitar at the Liverpool Festival of Music, Speech and Drama 2002, first prize for guitar at the Wirral Music Festival 2004, reaching the semi-finals of the Admira Young Guitarist of the World competition 2006 in Bath and more recently receiving a commendation prize for his performance at the world famous Ivor Mairants Guitar Award in London.
